Sustainable Food Systems

Food seen as a common good with 3 sustainable pillars: Economic, Social and Environmental

OUR ACTIONS ARE OUR FUTURE.
SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS FOR A ZERO HUNGER GENERATION

Reaching a generation without hunger is not only about tackling hunger, but also nurturing people while caring for the planet.

The future of humanity depends on our ability to create a food system that supports healthy people and a healthy planet. Today's food systems are outperforming the planet's resources, while current diets are resulting in global health crises, both in excess and malnutrition.

The continued growth of the population and changes in eating habits will increase these crises.

Thinking about it, we want to celebrate this year World Food Day by discussing actions in the food sector to make diets healthy, sustainable and accessible to all.

Current data

690 million people are hungry/malnourished, or 8.9% of the world's population. Global hunger has increased by 10 million people in the last year and nearly 60 million in five years. 840 million people will be affected by hunger by 2030.

750 million people - one in ten people - suffer severely from food insecurity. 19.1% of hungry people are in Africa

2 billion people did not have access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food in 2019. COVID-19 is estimated to add 132 million to malnutrition estimates for 2020.

Healthy diets are not accessible to many, especially the poor, in all regions. 3 billion people are unable to afford a healthy diet.

The cost of a healthy diet exceeds the international poverty line and food spending in most countries in the Global South. A healthy meal is 5 times more expensive than a starch-only meal.

Significant transformation in food systems is needed with context-specific policies and strategies. The good news is that there are affordable solutions to reduce all forms of malnutrition but require greater commitment and global action.
